TRENDY VS TIMELESS

TRENDY VS TIMELESS

Sometimes it’s hard to tell what design elements are “trendy” vs “timeless.” Design walks hand in hand with fashion, it comes and goes, oftentimes very quickly!

Keeping your home updated with current Interior Design trends can be fun for some and overwhelming for others. There is no right or wrong way to style your home. However a lot of homeowners are concerned with adding value to their home and creating beauty that will last. If this sounds familiar you are not alone!

Go Neutral

First suggestion on making a timeless decision is to go neutral with all major design elements (ei. Flooring, paint color, tile, furniture etc.)l. Starting with a neutral base will help your space last through the ages. So, if longevity is your main goal it is best to steer clear of that blue velvet couch and moody paint colors.

Instead, go on the lighter side of the neutral palette. Creams, soft and light beige/greige and variations of white are always classic and will not age out. You can always add pops of color and character through pillows, accent chairs and floral arrangements that are easily and inexpensively changed out.

Stay Natural

A good rule of thumb to remember when deciding on timeless elements to add to your space is “natural is best.” And by natural, I mean natural materials. Leather, genuine stone, hardwood floors and linen fabrics patina over time and don’t always look worse with wear! Opt for the well made leather sofa and solid wood dining table that will hold firm over years of use. A good designer will tell you a well made piece of furniture that has aged over the years will always beat out a cheaply made piece of furniture, even if it’s brand new. Quality items always add value to your home even if they are second hand or well loved.

Keep in Simple

Keep it simple with architectural items. Simple crown molding, shaker cabinets and symmetrical layouts will serve you well over time. While adding an archway, decorative trim and a laser etched pattern to your cabinet may be cute right now, you may regret these choices in ten years when those items have aged out.

If it feels like “everyone’s” doing it, it’s probably a fad. There are fads from every era. The colored shag from the 70’s, bold floral wallpaper from the 80’s, textured walls from the 90’s, and the infamous “millennial” gray phase from the 2010’s.

So if you’re trying to keep your home feeling timeless just remember to: Keep it neutral, keep it natural and keep it simple.

And at the end of the day keep it, you. All of our suggestions are general help ideas but the person living in your home is you. Your space should feel like a place you want to be. We always tell our clients to do what feels best to them because as our slogan states; “You bring the dream, we make it happen.”
